SYNOPSIS • MCNE vs • NetWare 5 CNE vs

Novell’s exam 050-649 (course 606), “TCP/IP For Networking Professionals” is one of the electives for the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) 5 certification. This exam is designed for candidates who understand “how to use TCP/IP on a NetWare 5 network.” There is no specific prerequisite for this exam.

This exam is moderately difficult and is priced at $125, $55.50, or $27.50 depending on the region in which it's taken.  Most North American and European and some Asia Pacific countries fall under the highest price tier. The exam may be taken from Pearson Vue or Thomson Prometric.

The passing score is 632. This exam is a form test (traditional), consisting of 80 questions, and has a duration of 120 minutes.

  • Describe TCP/IP addressing concepts
  • List TCP/IP addressing classes and characteristics
  • Define TCP/IP addressing types
  • Identify the purpose of subnets

  • Demonstrate the ability to use subnet masks to divide a network
  • Define supernetting and identify the number of hosts available on a network that uses supernetting
  • Describe the TCP/IP communication process
  • Compare and contrast the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols
  • Describe utilizing private network addresses to overcome the IPv4 address shortage
  • Identify the role of TCP/IP ports
  • List sources of TCP/IP information
  • Identify the purpose of the Internet Protocol (IP)
  • Identify the fields that compose the IP header and the function of each
  • Identify the purpose of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
  • Identify the purpose of User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
  • Identify the purpose of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) and the types of ICMP messages
  • Identify the purpose of Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
  • Identify the purpose of Network Time Protocol (NTP)
  • Describe TELNET and identify its purpose
  • Describe Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP) and identify its purpose

Out of date exam, BUT some CCNA grounding here, you could probably study for both at the same time if you were after your MCNE and CCNA... A lot to learn and it's all based on stuff you can't even see (we're talking microseconds and I think Nano should be used somewhere as it's the new word for micro!!!) Very fundamental stuff here but really need to know too. Interesting stuff about firewalls, routing and tcpip. If you need to learn to tcpip inc. subnet I reccomend www.learntcpip.com, really usefull.
