EXAMS: STUDY TIPS

Relates to: Solaris 8 SCSA
The Solaris™ 8 exam Part I has gone
back to the basics. The exam differs greatly from part I of the Solaris 7 exam
in that it starts with concepts that are central to improving the usability of
the operating system. The topics cover material that is both familiar and very
new to Solaris, but the approach is tailored to setting up the candidate with a
solid foundation of knowledge.
New items test on a candidate’s
ability to get things done in the operating system. There is material that
tests on using editors and understanding file system hierarchy, which come way
before someone is ready to start installing the operating system and manipulate
packages.
Perhaps this new approach will encourage
more people to start using the operating system and train towards becoming Unix
administrators.
Note: for those that already have the
Solaris 7 exams under their belt, Sun will offer an
“Upgrade Exam”
for a limited time that will cover the differences between 7 &
8.
Getting a jump on Solaris™ 8
testing is easy. There is tons of great material out there for the existing
exams that hasn’t changed much for the new tests. The best resource for
studying for the exam is the Solaris™ 7 Administrator Exam Cram
Guide by Darrell Ambro from Corolis (ISBN: 1576105474). This book came out
in early 2000 and covers both parts of the version 7 exams! So it is well worth
the money spent. Bill Calkins now has an updated Solaris™ 7 certification
guide called Solaris™ 7 Administrator Certification Training Guide
(ISBN: 1578702496) that includes great CDROM practice questions. Official
Solaris™ training from Sun is a good but expensive way to become
certified.
Studying material for the Solaris™
7 tests, updating your knowledge to cover the new topics in Solaris™ 8 and
getting plenty of hands on experience will spell success!
