Prior to the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RCHE) exam
consisted of both hands-on lab sections and a multiple choice section. The new exam has dropped
the multiple choice section and has added a half hour to the hands-on lab. The exam now has just
these two sections:
Section I: Troubleshooting and System Maintenance (2.5 hours)
Section II: Installation and Configuration (3 hours)
Since December 1, 2003, all classes provided by Red Hat cover Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. In terms of
the passing scores for the related exam, here's what you must achieve: "In order to earn RHCE, candidates
must complete all compulsory Troubleshooting and System Maintenance problems, earn a section score of 80
or higher on Section I, and earn a score of 70 or higher on both the RHCT and RHCE items in the Installation
and Configuration section."
And as to why Red Hat changed the structure of the RHCE exam, here's what they say: "After nearly five years
of delivering RHCE exams, we have concluded that the time spent during the exam asking multiple choice
questions would be better spent on performance-based tasks. Analysis of the data we have collected
demonstrates that the performance-based sections of the exam were far more effective than the multiple
choice section."
