"When
launching outlook, user receives the error message 'Cannot start MS Outlook,
MAPI32.dll is missing or the wrong version'."
If you launch MS
Outlook 97/98 you may receive the error message: Cannot start MS Outlook,
MAPI32.dll is missing or the wrong version. This could have been caused
by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall
Outlook.
This can be caused by a setting in Netscape Navigator
4.5 or later. You can diagnose the problem by launching Netscape and
performing the following:
1. Click on the 'Edit' drop down menu and
select Preferences
2. On the left hand side, click on Mail
and Newsgroups
3. On the right hand side, the last field at the
bottom will say Use Netscape Messenger from MAPI-based
applications
4. If this box is checked, then uncheck it.
5.
Click on OK and then close Netscape.
6. Launch
Outlook.
Outlook should then open up and function as normal. The
reason for this is because when you choose to Use Netscape Messenger from
MAPI-based applications, Netscape swaps out Microsoft's MAPI32.dll file
with its own version of MAPI32.dll. By unchecking the box, Microsoft's
version of MAPI32.dll is used and Outlook can funtion properly.
