In my last article, we discussed how to prepare your existing network for a
NetWare 6 server. We also took a very brief look at the Installation Options
that were available, including: Install NetWare 6, Upgrade to NetWare 6;
Migrate with the Migration Wizard; the NetWare Accelerated Upgrade and Other
Installation/Upgrade Options. It is very important that your network is
prepared prior to introducing your first NetWare 6 server into an existing
network. Please be sure to read my last article “Are You Ready to Install
NetWare 6?” before you start your new installation.
Hardware Prerequisites:
Regardless of whether you choose
to do a fresh installation, or an upgrade, you will need to ensure that your
server machine meets the minimum requirements listed below. Of course, in a
production requirement you are going to want to increase the power of your
machine to get the most out of it. Since you can configure swap files for each
volume on your server, you will also want to increase the available disk space
to increase performance.
Server-Class PC with a Pentium II or later processor (recommend Pentium III
700 MHz for multiple processor machines)
256 MB RAM (512 MB Recommended)
Super VGA or higher resolution display adapter
DOS partition of at least 200 MB with 200 MB available (1 GB Recommended).
If you want the ability to do a core dump for troubleshooting purposes you will
want to ensure additional space equal to the amount of RAM in your machine
2 GB of available disk space outside of the DOS partition with 4 GB
recommended for the SYS volume.
One or more network boards
A CD drive. For bootable CDs to work, your CD drive must support the
ElToritio specification
USB, PS/2, or serial mouse recommended but not required. However if you
don’t have a mouse you’ll drive yourself crazy once you get to the GUI screens
during your installation.
Rights Required:
NetWare 6 extends your existing schema so
you will need Supervisor rights to the [Root] of your existing tree. For those
of you who are not sure the term schema means... A set of rules that determine
which objects can be created, what properties each object should have and where
those objects can be created. There are new objects and properties included
with NetWare 6 and therefore the schema extension is required.
You will
also require the Supervisor right to the container where the server will be
installed, and the Browse and Read rights to the security container (Don’t
forget that in eDirectory you can block the Supervisor rights so it’s possible
to have S to the [Root] and not have them at these other locations).
Other Information You Will Need:
Make sure you have the
following information before you start the installation also:
The name of the drivers for your Network card and storage devices as well as
IRQs, port addresses, slot number etc. if they are not included with NetWare.
Create The Boot Partition:
Once you have determined how
large your boot partition should be you need to pick a method to create it from
one of the following:
Use the NetWare 6 operating system CD to boot from and select the create a
boot partition option and follow the options on screen or
Boot from a DOS 3.3 or later boot diskette. The NetWare 6
license/cryptography disk is bootable with DOS 7 and has all of the required
utilities.
If your machine had another operating system on it you should use FDISK to
remove the operating system and the partitions first
Use FDISK to create an active DOS partition and restart the computer
Format and transfer the DOS system files to the partition by changing to
drive A and typing FORMAT C: /S.
Ensure that your CONFIG.SYS file contains the following commands:
FILES=50
BUFFERS=30
Note: Be sure that you do not have any memory
managers loaded, NetWare has it’s own memory management that will conflict with
other utilities.
Installation:
Now, you’re ready to start your installation
of NetWare 6. First thing you need to do is to access your CD drive and enter
INSTALL. The first portion of the installation is all done through text
menus that will show settings that have been auto detected or show default
settings that you can modify as required. Lets take a look at the tasks
required to complete the installation.
Accept the License Agreement:
First of all, you are going to READ the license and then accept it by either
pressing F10 or clicking on the Accept License Agreement button. There are
actually two types of license agreements with NetWare 6.
