W2K Migrating from NT 4.0 - Study Tips

As always, hands-on experience is very important. If possible, install a Windows NT 4.0 PDC and a BDC. (If you have the MOC manual, make sure you do the 90-minute lab in Module 5.) Using the Active Directory Migration Tool, migrate users and groups to a new W2K Server. This will give you first-hand knowledge of what is involved, such as requirements, restrictions, and what options are available. Try performing the same actions using ClonePrincipal. Also, play with the Netdom, LDP, and MoveTree utilities.

Make sure you understand network infrastructure. A good grasp of Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, WINS, and TCP/IP is essential for any Windows 2000 implementation. Remember that Microsoft expects that in order to pass the Windows 2000 exams, a minimum of 1 year of experience with a NOS is required. This experience should include installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, as well as familiarity with remote access, routing issues, and connectivity.

This exam, like all of the Windows 2000 design exams, uses case studies to test your ability to analyze real-life situations and then draw appropriate inferences. For FAQs on Microsoft’s exam innovations, go to www.microsoft.com/TRAINCERT/mcpexams/faq/innovations.asp.

The “build list and reorder” questions, which are present in both the case study and non-case study portions of the exam, are particularly challenging for some. In these types of questions, you are asked to build an answer list from items in a list of answer choices and then (in most, but not all, cases) arrange the items in the order in which they would be performed. For an example of a “build list and reorder” question, go to www.transcender.com/products/screen_shot.asp?id=1050. When studying, pay careful attention to the tasks required for a particular activity, e.g., preparing for a migration, and the order in which the tasks are executed.

Finally, be aware of what is arguably the most important task in any migration; i.e., planning. The lack of proper planning is responsible for more project failures than any other factor. The exam emphasizes planning activities in the migration process, so ensure that you spend sufficient time on this in your preparation.

Untitled Document > Persistent Group Chat: An Approach for More Profitable Team Communications : Unlike email, instant messages (IMs) do not allow group communication; nor do they persist -- you can't hold on to them for as long as you wish. Persistent group chat, however, allows businesses to organize persistent dialogue around business-critical topics, and keep them for easy retrieval later.
